Chandra, a thief skilled in the art of theft, once stole a large amount of money and kept it in a safe place. He saw the image of Vishnu, the family deity in his dreams. Therefore, he went to Vishnu's temple and offered all the money to the deity. He experienced immense joy and great satisfaction from this virtuous act. After his death, he was taken by Yama's attendants to Chitragupta, where his sins and merits were reviewed. Chitragupta declared that Chandra would be punished with a month's stay in hell for his theft. When Chandra asked if offering the stolen money to God would cleanse his sin, Chitragupta replied that the punishment for the committed sin was inevitable. Only after serving the punishment would he experience the fruits of his good deed.
